Paul Lawrie
has spoken out against six members of the winning Ryder cup 2012 team
who have chosen not to play in the Seve Trophy. The Scottish golfer,
ranked 74th in the world, has criticised players, including Rory McIlroy,
who were expected to play at the St-Nom-La Breteche Golf Club in Paris.
In addition to
McIlroy golfers Luke Donald, Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell, Ian Poulter
and Lee Westwood will not play for the GB and Ireland team, at an event
created by and dedicated to golfing legend Seve Ballesteros.
Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011 after a long battle with cancer,
was a five-time major winner and was involved in the trophy five times
before his death.
The absence of such
key figures has meant that the Continental Europe team are clear
favourites to lift the trophy with the best odds on the market at 4/7
(1.57). Despite GB and Ireland winning this event six times in a row,
the bookmakers do not have faith in captain Sam Torrance and his team
priced at 13/8 (2.63). Visit

GB and Ireland golfer
Chris Wood is also disappointed at the lack of star names in the
tournament. The six players chose to opt out for reasons ranging from
busy schedules, weddings and proximity to the FedEx cup. However many of
the GB and Ireland players, including Wood, have expressed their
confidence in the squad, as they prepare to face Continental Europe.
This may be that the players are putting on a brave face, but if you do
fancy the GB and Ireland team to win you can find great odds on a number
of markets from outright winner to handicap betting.
The Continental
Europe team has plenty of big names in their line up and will be
captained by Ryder Cup winner Jose Maria Olazabal. Olazabal was a close
friend and playing partner of Ballesteros and has expressed his
commitment to the event. It may be that Olazabals emotional connections
will bring victory for the Continental Europe team for the first time
since 2000, in the Spanish golfers second reign as captain.
The players who will
be battling it out in the 9th biennial Seve Trophy are:
GB and Ireland: Paul
Casey, Simon Khan, Paul Lawrie, Jamie Donaldson, David Lynn, Marc
Warren, Chris Wood, Stephen Gallacher, Tommy Fleetwood, Scott Jamieson.
Continental Europe:
Thomas Bjorn, Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Joost Luiten, Matteo Manassero,
Gregory Bourdy, Nicolas Colsaerts, Francesco Molinari, Thorbjorn Olesen,
Mikko Ilonen, Miguel Angel Jimenez.
